To get students familiar with the structural, electrical, magnetic and optical properties of materials. To introduce students the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and solid state physics. To teach students light and electromagnetic wave interaction with materials. To introduce students the physics at material interfaces and surfaces. To introduce students the advanced and nanomaterials
Content: This course is designed to provide engineering majors with their first in-depth understanding of the scientific fundamentals of materials. The course content involves: Material physics and structural ordering; Electrons in solids, Fermi energy, and band-gap; Classes of materials, nanomaterials, and emerging materials; Properties of materials: electronic, optical, magnetic, mechanical, thermoelectrical, and electromechanical; Characterization fundamentals of materials; Introduction to quantum mechanics; Introduction to solid state physics, and semiconductors; Optical materials, light interaction with materials; Electromagnetics waves and their interaction with materials; Advanced and nanomaterials; Physics at surfaces, interfaces, thin films, and multilayers.
