Objective: To give solution thermodynamics in detail and to present reactions involving gases and reactions involving pure condensed phases; the criteria for reaction equilibrium in systems containing components in condensed solution
Content: The behavior of solutions; Raoult’s Law and Henry’s Law, the Gibbs Duhem equation, Solution thermodynamics. Gibbs Free Energy Composition and Phase Diagrams of Binary Systems; criteria for phase stability in regular solutions, liquid and solid standard states, phase diagrams, Gibbs free energy and thermodynamic activity. Reaction involving gases; reaction equilibrium in a gas mixture and the equilibrium constant, reaction equilibrium as a compromise between enthalpy and entropy. Reactions Involving Pure Condensed Phases and A Gaseous Phase; Ellingham Diagrams, the effect of phase transformations. Reaction Equilibria in Systems Containing Components in Condensed Solution; the Gibbs phase rule, the solubility of gases in metals. Electrochemistry; the Gibbs free energy of formation of ions and standard reduction potentials
