Objective: To teach basic definitions and laws of thermodynamics; entropy and enthalpy concepts; phase equilibrium in a one- component system and the behaviors of gases, finally the fundamental principles of thermodynamics to Material Engineering
Content: Concepts of state, simple equilibrium, the state of an ideal gas, extensive and intensive properties. Internal energy and the first law of thermodynamics, processes, heat capacity, entropy and the quantification of irreversibility, the second law of thermodynamics, the combine statement of the first and the second law of thermodynamics. Transport mechanisms; heat transfer. The statistical interpretation of entropy, thermal equilibrium and the Boltzmann equation. Definition of the entropy, the Helmholtz free energy, the Gibbs free energy, Maxwell equations. The third law of thermodynamics, phase equilibrium in a one component system. The behavior gases, the P-V-T relation of gases
